Statistics and Reports - Australians Overseas

Statistical Tables

Estimated Number of Australians Living Overseas
This table provides estimates of the number of Australians living overseas as at December 2001. The data was provided to the Southern Cross Group by the Consular Coordination Unit within the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT), Canberra, in February 2002. It is presented alphabetically by DFAT post (Embassy or Consulate). The estimates are based on the incidence of consular activity at each post for the year 2001.

Analysis of Estimated Number of Australians Living Overseas
This table, based on the data provided to the Southern Cross Group by DFAT's Consular Coordination Unit in February 2002, provides a breakdown of the estimated 860,000 Australians living overseas as at December 2001, by DFAT post and country, but grouped by world region.

Australians Overseas Compared to Australian Population
This table, prepared by the Southern Cross Group, compares the number of Australians living overseas as at December 2001 with Australian population figures on a State/Territory and capital city basis.

Reports

2002 Survey on Emigration of Skilled Australians
Many Southern Cross Group members participated in a survey of expatriates carried out in the first half of 2002 by GISCA at the University of Adelaide. Read about the preliminary results here.

Emigration From Australia - Economic Implications (CEDA Information Paper No. 77)
The Committee for Economic Development of Australia (CEDA) is an independent, apolitical organisation made up of business leaders, academics and others who have an interest in, and commitment to, Australia's economic and social development. CEDA aims to undertake objective discussion and research into issues affecting Australia 's growth.

This June 2001 report examines the causes and consequences of rising emigration from Australia. It contains many useful statistical tables and is held in our Archives in three parts:

Part 1 - Introduction to section 2
Part 2 - Sections 3 to 4
Part 3 - Sections 5 to 6 and list of references

Skilled Labour: Gains and Losses
By Bob Birrell, Ian R Dobson, Virginia Rapson and T. Fred Smith of the Centre for Population and Urban Research, Monash University, July 2001.

This Report examines the movement of skilled workers to and from Australia over the five year period 1995-96 to 1999-2000. The main objective was to establish the extent of any losses or gains of such workers by occupation over this period. The Report also incorporates a qualitative component which explores the factors shaping the international movement of skilled workers.

The report is held in our Archives in two parts:

Part 1 - The main report
Part 2 - Appendix
