Overview
The identification of authoritative statistics is a key element of the Southern
Cross Group's research and advocacy development.
Where possible, we prefer to draw our statistical information from publicly
available sources in government, public authorities, international organisations,
universities and other educational institutions, and reputable research organisations.
The source of the various sets of data included on our website is always shown
as a footnote to the respective tables.
Some of the data that we obtain is provided to us as free-standing tables with little information as to the basis on which the information has been compiled. In some other cases, the data has been drawn from more detailed reports that we have located or had referred to us. Where we are able to ascertain the basis on which the data has been compiled we include an explanatory note to that effect. Context is particularly important when considering data drawn from reports and users should examine the related report before placing reliance on statistical data on this website.
Information that has been compiled by the Southern Cross Group itself is the subject of copyright and you should consider our Terms of Use.
In those situations in which it has not been practicable or possible to place the full text of data or reports on our site, you will find a link to the original source.
Should you be aware of any statistical data or reports relevant to our key issues, we would be glad if you would let us know. Our Australian Coordinator, John "Sid" MacGregor, is responsible for this section of our website.
How We Group Our Statistical Data
Our statistical information has been broken into several groups for ease of reference. In some cases the placement of data in a particular group may seem arbitrary given that the information may be seen by some users as also applicable to one or more other groups. Within each group you will find a sub-group in which relevant reports are listed together with their appropriate links. The groupings are:
Australian Population
The information in this group is relevant to the Australian population resident
within the national borders of Australia. It covers both Australian citizens
and citizens of other nations resident in Australia. Generally, it will not
include Australians living overseas.
Overseas Australians
Here you will find information relating to Australian citizens living overseas,
some of whom will be dual nationals. We tend to favour the DIMIA definition
that living permanently overseas means an intended or actual absence in excess
of 12 months. However, it is not always clear that the information we have
assembled reflects that philosophy.
Australian Electoral Matters
and Overseas Voting
Included in this group is information relevant to Australian Federal, State
and Territory electoral matters. There is an emphasis on data relating to
voting by Australians living overseas.
