All About Our Book

australian expats: stories from abroad book

Australian Expats: stories from abroad (ISBN 1-876438-05-3) was published in October 2003 by Global Exchange and the Southern Cross Group. We're pleased to announce that in August 2004 it was short-listed for the ASA Travel Writing Award at the Melbourne Writers' Festival. Read about the nomination here.

The book makes a great gift for Australian friends and family both in Australia and abroad. To find out how to get your copy, click here.

The 240-page book comprises 33 stories from Australians around the world, recounting their experiences as expats in many countries. We believe this is the first ever collection of stories from the Australian diaspora. In addition, the book features a thoughtful and thought-provoking foreword by well-known Australian author Nikki Gemmell, herself an expat.

The stories in the book were selected from over 170 stories contributed in response to the SCG's call to the expatriate community worldwide to "tell their story". All those who submitted stories to the Project are mentioned in the back of the book. Many stories not published in the book itself are now available online on this website. The back cover of the book refers readers to the SCG website for additional stories.

The book was launched in a gala event at Australia House in London attended by over 200 people in early October 2003. About a third of the 33 authors featured were present from around the world and a number gave readings from their stories. In the following few months other launch events were held in Melbourne, Adelaide, Canberra, Brisbane, Sydney, Brussels, Geneva, Chicago, Washington DC, Dublin, and New York.

Extracts by eight authors appeared in TNT Magazine in London on 13 October 2003. Geraldine Doogue discussed the book on Life Matters on ABC Radio National on 20 October 2003 and the book was also featured on ABC Local Radio Canberra 666 on 22 October by Afternoon Show presenter Andrea Close, and ABC Local Radio Brisbane 612 on 23 October by Alex Burnard. Sydney Radio 2UE 954 presenter Steve Price gave the book a great wrap on 27 October. In addition the book was noted in articles in the Sydney Morning Herald and The Age on 25 October 2003, and in The Bulletin on 29 October 2003. Phillip Adams interviewed co-editor Anne MacGregor, story contributor Isla Winarto and Professor Graeme Hugo about the book and the Australian diaspora on ABC Radio National Late Night Live (which can be listened to here) on 3 November 2003.

Royalties from the book and profits made from sales by SCG volunteers go to the SCG to help it continue its advocacy and support work on behalf of the Australian diaspora.
