Online Citizenship Affirmation Facility

Once you have read the information we have outlined on the previous page, you will be able to decide whether you wish to make an online affirmation of your citizenship (or an affirmation of your loyalty to Australia if you are not currently an Australian citizen in the formal sense). If you would now like to proceed with your affirmation, please follow the steps below.

Your affirmation will be sent as an e-mail directly to the Australian Minister for Immigration and Citizenship, the Hon Kevin Andrews MP. It is important to include your name, address, telephone number and e-mail address so that the Minister can respond.

A copy of your online affirmation will also be sent to your own e-mail address, for your records.

In addition, you may wish to fill in the names and e-mail addresses of up to five relatives or friends who are important to you, and with whom you would like to share the fact that you have affirmed your Australian citizenship (or your loyalty to Australia if you are not a citizen). Those people will then also receive a copy of your affirmation.

Citizenship Affirmation

Message:

To: the Hon Kevin Andrews MP
Minister for Immigration and Citizenship
Parliament House
Canberra ACT 2600
Australia

Dear Mr Andrews,

As an Australian citizen I note your campaign to encourage Australian citizens to affirm their citizenship at Affirmation Ceremonies around Australia.

I am unable to attend an affirmation ceremony in my area.

Nevertheless, I would like you to note my affirmation as follows:

As an Australian citizen,
I affirm my loyalty to Australia and its people,
whose democratic beliefs I share,
whose rights and liberties I respect,
and whose laws I uphold and obey.

You now have the option to include the following extra paragraph in your affirmation. Click the checkbox on the left if you wish to incorporate this text:

In addition, I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate the Government on the 2002 repeal of Section 17 of the Australian Citizenship Act 1948.

You may also wish to include in your message the additional comments below on the Australian Citizenship Act 2007 which was finally passed by the Australian Federal Parliament on 1 March 2007 and will come into force on 1 July 2007. We stress that this is entirely voluntary. Again, click on the checkbox at left to make the text below part of your message:

I also congratulate the Government on the enactment of the Australian Citizenship Act 2007 on 1 March 2007. I am pleased that the Government has at last enacted legislation to give effect to the changes first announced on 7 July 2004.

The Australian Citizenship Act 2007 is an excellent piece of legislation for the Australian diaspora. I am pleased that under the Act, individuals who lost their citizenship under Sections 17, 18, 20 and 23 of the 1948 Act are provided with a simplified route to resumption, and will only have to demonstrate that they are of good character.

In particular I welcome the fact that individuals born overseas to Section 17 victims after their loss of citizenship will be given the opportunity to apply for Australian citizenship, and will only have to demonstrate that they are of good character. However, I believe individuals born to Section 18 victims should receive the same treatment. I was sorry to see that the Government has seen fit to exclude some 3000 Maltese children of Australian-born parents from access to Australian citizenship under the 2007 Act.

Finally, I welcome the fact that many overseas-born people who missed out on registration as citizens by descent for various reasons even though they had an Australian-born parent at the time of their birth, will now be given an opportunity to apply for registration as Australian citizens by descent.

If you have an additional, personal message to Mr Andrews, you may type it in the text box below. This is entirely optional and you may leave the box blank.

Yours sincerely,
